The Red Rocker himself, SAMMY HAGAR, released his autobiography, titled Red, on March 15th. The book focuses on Hagar's life and times as a solo artist, as well as his time as the frontman for VAN HALEN. The timing of Red's release seems to coincide with other rockers releasing their stories, due in no small part to the success of KEITH RICHARDS' recent autobiography, Life. However, Hagar says of Red, "Quite honestly, I've been writing this book my whole life. When something really cool would happen or something really crazy, I'd say, 'This is going in the book,' in the back of my head."
While a lot of Red focuses on the wild times Hagar had with Van Halen, it also goes into detail about his firing in 1996 and the tumultuous reunion he had with EDDIE VAN HALEN when the band did a reunion tour in 2004. Hagar feels it's important for him to tell his side of the story concerning those events. Though he calls his time in Van Halen "the rock and roll tent in my life, the musical part of it," he notes, "The little bit of dirt I had to kick was just me telling my story...If you talk to [Eddie and ALEX VAN HALEN], what do they say? 'He quit! He's not a team player, he wants to be a solo artist.' It's like, come on. I wanted my story told."
Hagar says he doesn't plan on writing another book but, if he did, it would likely be a cookbook, written with "my chef friends and all my family recipes...I could kind of combine the Cabo Wabo all into, kind of, a lifestyle cookbook." As for Red, Hagar says there's plenty of sex, drugs and rock and roll for the reader to consume. However, he did point out that he won't let his young daughters read the book due to the racy material. To prep them, he jokes, "I'm gonna make them read Keith Richards' book first."
