Smoke detectors are being credited with saving a family from fire early Christmas Eve.
It happened around 4 a.m. in the 4000 block of West 19th Street, in the neighborhood just south of where West Street turns into 21st Street North. When crews arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the basement.
The Wichita Fire Department says the smoke detectors alerted the family inside and they escaped safely. The home has extensive damage and the Red Cross is assisting the family.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. No one was hurt.
