Candidates file for mayor’s office, two Wichita city council seats

Nine candidates have filed for the Wichita mayor’s office in the upcoming August primary election, while eight candidates have filed for three open seats on the city council.

Mayor Jeff Longwell will have eight challengers, including Mark Gietzen, president of the Kansas Republican Assembly; and Ascension Via Christi board chairman Lindy Wells.  Other candidates include Joshua Atkinson, Brock Booker, Ian Demory, Amy Lyon, Marty Mork and Brandon Whipple.

District two city council member Becky Tuttle has filed for a full term in office.  She is filling the remaining term of Pete Meitzner, who now serves on the Sedgwick County Commission.  Joseph Scapa and Rodney Wren have also filed for the seat.

Vice mayor Jeff Blubaugh has filed for a second term in office in the city’s fourth district, and he will be challenged by Becky Jenek and Christopher Parisho.

Bryan Frye has filed for re-election to the district five city council seat, and he will be challenged by Mike Magness.

There will be a number of open seats for mayor and city council in Bel Aire, Derby, Haysville and other communities across Sedgwick County.   The filing deadline was noon Monday.

The primary election will be August 6th.  The last day to register to vote for the primary will be July 16th.  Advance ballots will begin mailing on July 17th and early voting begins in the election office on July 22nd.    Satellite voting locations will be open August 1st, 2nd and 3rd.     The last day for in-person advance voting for the primary will be August 5th, with early voting ending at noon at the election office.

The top two candidates in each race will advance to the general election on November 5th.
