Hutchinson Correctional Facility on lockdown because of COVID-19 cases

More reports of coronavirus have led to a lockdown at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

The Kansas Department of Corrections said 84 residents and 10 staff members tested positive this week.  A total of 99 residents and 17 staff have tested positive since the pandemic began.  Five residents and seven staff members have recovered.    None of the people who tested positive have reported any symptoms.

The facility has been working with state health officials on the next steps to prevent further spread of the virus.  All residents in the Central Unit will remain locked in their cells. Any necessary movement will be done in cohort groups.   Resident workers in laundry and food services will be on a limited schedule, and some residents may be moved to the Lansing Correctional Facility, which has been caring for COVID-19 patients in its medical unit.

The facility has a population of 1,844 inmates.
