Suspect arrested in southeast Kansas murder

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said a 61-year-old Coffeyville man was arrested after a homicide investigation.

The man had been in custody since officers found him leaving a Coffeyville duplex on the morning of May 16th.   Officers went inside and found the body of 47-year-old Melvin Simpson, Jr.  He had been shot.

The suspect was taken into custody on unrelated charges, but after an investigation he was booked for suspected first-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, felony obstruction of justice, and unlawful discharge of a weapon.   He is being held in the Montgomery County jail as the investigation continues.
