Suspect in custody for southeast Kansas murder

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says a Coffeyville man has been arrested for a fatal shooting.

The body of 47-year-old Melvin Simpson, Jr. was found May 16th at a duplex in Coffeyville.  Officers questioned a 61-year-old man who was seen leaving the duplex, and he was arrested then on unrelated charges.   The officers then found Simpson’s body when they went inside.

After an investigation, the 61-year-old man was booked for suspected first degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, felony obstruction of justice, and unlawful discharge of a weapon.   He is being held in the Montgomery County jail.
